Airborne Affordable Flyers 08.07.25: MOSAIC Review, Spirit SE-1, Hummingbird

Also: OSH26 Goes Vertical, Christen Eagle Reborn, CubCrafters New Feathers, SiriusXM Expands

The long-awaited MOSAIC regulation finally published in the Federal Register, lets look at what it means and how it affects you... Spirit Engineering blew the hangar doors off Oshkosh with its SE-1. The single-seat SE-1 was deliberately kept off the radar until it arrived in Oshkosh, where four aircraft made the cross-country trip from Grand Junction, Colorado… and burned just 88 gallons of gas between them. Spirit Engineering made the aircraft basic in all the right ways. Vertical Aviation Technologies has reintroduced its Five-Stage Purchasing Program for the Hummingbird helicopter, letting builders eat that elephant one bite at a time with a selection of packages. Also: SkyFest Returns To Arlington, NY Air Show, Lovell Remembered, Virgin Galactic Delays

Falling just short of the 30,351-jump record, the 2025 World Skydiving Day counted 26,718 skydives from almost 40 countries. The United States topped the charts this year, with more than 13,000 jumps logged in the 24-hour period. The FAA has unveiled a new workforce plan that aims to hire 8,900 air traffic controllers by the end of 2028, with 2,000 of those hires expected in 2025. The move is part of a larger strategy to address the agency’s persistent staffing shortages, which have contributed to delays, operat

Airborne-NextGen 08.05.25: UAV Disaster Relief, Neo 2 Rumors, SkyDrive

Also: NASA-Firefly Contract, US-EU Trade Deal, Boom Symphony Engine, AIR Snags $23M

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced its participation in a practical training exercise in conjunction with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s Asaka Garrison, the goal of which was to improve response capabilities in the event of an earthquake centered in the Tokyo metro area. The mid-size UAV is electric powered and intended for a variety of missions including transport of disaster relief supplies, logistical support to remote areas, and transport of construction materials for power transmission towers. The DJI Neo was a surprising hit amongst content creators, acting as an autonomous cameraman and lightweight tag-along, but the regulatory environment of 2025 may keep its sequel away. The DJI Neo 2 recently showed up on the FCC website, an essential step whenever a new drone came to the U.S. domestic market. But drone fans have been eyeing shipment
