JAL Orders 17 Boeing 737 MAX 8s

Orders Total 38 Since 2023 Part Of Fleet Replacement Program

Japan Airlines is pushing forward with its fleet replacement program as it announced an order for an additional 17 Boeing 737 Max 8 after ordering 21 of the same aircraft in March 2023. The Japanese flag airline is replacing its single-aisle Boeing 737-800 on domestic routes.

The 737 MAX 8 is a newer and more fuel-efficient model with improved engines and aerodynamics.

The airline said, “Renewing the fleet in line with supply and demand will further enhance profitability.”

The newer MAX 8 uses the newer CFM LEAP-1B engines that are high-bypass turbofans made by CFM International, a 50-50 joint venture of American GE Aerospace and French Safran Aircraft Engines. The range of the MAX 8 is between 3,300 to 3,859 nm as compared to 3,115 nm of the 737-800.

The MAX 8 also has a modern technologically advanced flight deck with four large displays.

The 737 MAX 8 aircraft will be delivered during JAL’s 2026 fiscal year. The airline’s fleet modernization also includes 11 Airbus A321neo aircraft it ordered at the 2024 Farnborough international Airshow. They will replace the Boeing 767 currently used on routes to and from Haneda Airport (HND) in Tokyo.

In addition, going out to 2030 JAL plans to order 10 Boeing 787-9, 20 Airbus A350-900, and 6 Airbus A350-1000 for international routes, as well as 3 Airbus A350-900 for domestic routes.
